Creative Critical Reflection

1.             How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?

Our product challenges social conventions because it shows that even if you’re not playing sports and being athletic you can still find a use for Nike products. By showing people just doing everyday things like homework ad walking around we show how Nike products are useful for everyday activities. I also show how it relates to athletic and sporty people by showing shots of people playing sports in their Nike attire. It also represents social groups as it shows groups of people playing sports and the groups of people doing everyday things. It also shows how girls can do anything guys can by having a mix of men and women in our commercials.

2. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?

The commercial I made engages with the audience in many ways. One way is with the types of music we used. We used 3 different songs in order to get different reactions from the audience. The first one I used was made to build up excitement when the actors were playing sports like soccer and volleyball. The second one was to completely change the mood of the song to bring some humor into it and bring back any of the audience that started to get bored. The last song I used was used to bring back the excitement and make the logo seem more impressive. Another way I engaged with audiences through the different activities seen in the commercial. I used things like walking around and grading schoolwork to relate to the average person who also does these things. I also included shots of people running and playing sports to show our product could be used by not only everyday people but also people who do things like play sports. The way it would be distributed is as advertisements on TV, social media, or other online places. By having the different shots and types of music it could hopefully keep a viewer engaged long enough to avoid them pressing the skip button. The different kinds of shots and music should also help people remember our ad and remember the product next time they are shopping.

3.                 How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

My production skills greatly developed throughout the project. I learned how to do different kinds of shots like pan and tracking shots. While filming I learned many things about the filming process. I learned how hard it is to do quick zoom ins and outs and learned that being a cameraman takes a lot of skill and effort. I also learned a lot about the editing process. I learned how hard it really was to find copyright free music. I also learned how hard it was to find fitting transitions for every single shot.  The last thing I learned a lot about was how many takes it takes to get a long shot without any issues. When filming both the soccer and the volleyball shots it took many takes to get because they would miss the kick on the soccer ball, or the volleyball would bounce weird, or they would just mess up the actions asked of them to do.

    4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?

I integrated technologies like camera equipment and editing software while working on this project. While filming our group used a special piece of equipment that let us stabilize our handheld phones and keep it from being shaky. The tool moved up and down and side to side as your arm moved in order to stay stable or show pan/tracking shots. Another piece of equipment we used was a software editing app called iMovie in order to edit our commercial. The software allowed us to do things like add transitions and edit the lengths and speed of our clips. We were even able to add zooms during the editing that we have forgotten or done wrong while filming.
