Research: How to make a short film
While are group watched the “How to make a short film” video, we took some notes below that we found usefull:
- Do the opposite of what you think is conventional. In essence you want to trick the audience, or take them by surprise. You do not want the film to be too predictable. By going against your instincts as well as going outside the box, we could add that real mystery factor to our film.
- Let the theme and genre guide the story. We learned here that we should resolve our whole story around our genre. This would make sure that it fits and flows correctly, giving us the mysterious result that we hope to abtain.
- Use proper shots, camera angles, lighting, props, etc. This relates to “building around your genre”. We need to select all of the above to fit our genre and theme correctly. This allows the story to flow properly and make more sense. We do not want to confuse the audience with contrasting lighting and props that may connotate different themes.
- Write to your actors strenghts/weaknesses- Our group must fit our actors and their respective styles. For example, we might not want to give the big and scary role to someone who does not look to intimidating. This would leave the audicnce confused and question the film. Instead the actors should fit their roles and play th
em with meaning. - Sound is crucial to any film. It can easlily fill up any “empty space” that there might be. The use of non-deigentic and diegtic sound, that fits the genre and tone will add a lot to our film.
- Getting some othe rpeople to watch the film first will give us needed different perspectives. This will allow us to make changes as needed, so that it flows more conitnously and makes sense. This feedback will be critical in the final stages of production.
